Jackhammer work is now taking place on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad as more rockwork is removed and scaffolding is added during our latest construction check-in.

Big Thunder Mountain Construction Update

We started our latest construction tour with a view from the Walt Disney World Railroad of the maintenance barn. During our last look at the barn, we noticed construction crew members taking pieces of track from where they were lifted by crane and stacking them outside. It now appears the pieces of track have been moved to a different location.

Moving on to the old west town called Tumbleweed, more modern walkways have been built over the mountain. Multicolored extnension cables run along the ground and a small metal stepladder is propped near the rocks.

Some of the new extension cables run all the way to the Dave V. Jones Mine. It is too dark to see what kind of work might be happening inside the cave entrance, but it appears a light or tool was in need of power.

Moving across the new construction walkway, more metal scaffolds have been put into place along the upper path behind the dead tree. Orange cones also line the walkway on this higher level.

Closer to the train, we heard crew members hard at work with a jackhammer. The crew member on the bottom right was hammering against the hard rocks that sit below the track area. This is the same section of the mountain where we saw a long stretch of track being removed. It is likely that the jackhammer work was unable to begin until this stretch of Thunder Mountain Railroad track was lifted away.

A larger group of crew members were working together with jackhammers on the left. The hammering on the hard rocks caused a small cloud of grey dust to rise above the trench.

Finally, more of the metal scaffolding and rails have been added to the curve of track near the water. No major construction has been seen yet on this corner of the mountain, but this may change in the coming weeks since the scaffolding looks nearly complete.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad has been announced to remain closed for all of 2025. Imagineers have teased that when the ride reopens in 2026, it will have a “little bit of new magic.” In addition to Thunder Mountain, the area is also being prepared for a Disney Villains-themed land behind the attraction and a new “Cars” area in place of the current Rivers of America.
