Disney’s “Tangled” live-action movie is currently in development with “The Greatest Showman” film director Michael Gracey.
Variety reports that the studio is currently developing a reimagining of the 2010 animated movie. It will be a musical take on the Brothers Grimm story about the magically long-haired princess Rapunzel. Michael Gracey, the filmmaker behind “The Greatest Showman,” is in talks to direct the film from a script by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, whose credits include Netflix’s campy dark comedy “Do Revenge,” “Thor: Love and Thunder” and the upcoming “I Know What You Did Last Summer” reboot. Any casting for the film has yet to be announced.
“Tangled” tells the story of Rapunzel, a princess (voiced by Mandy Moore) who is eventually rescued from her secluded tower by an outlaw named Flynn Rider. This Disney film boasts the Oscar-nominated song “When Will My Life Begin” and even inspired spinoffs like the short film “Tangled Ever After” in 2012 and the TV series “Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure” in 2017.
Gracey made his directorial debut with “The Greatest Showman” in 2017 – the P.T. Barnum biographical musical drama starring Hugh Jackman. His latest project is “Better Man,” a semi-autobiographical story about a British musician, Robbie Williams, portrayed in the film by a chimpanzee.
Disney has given multiple animated films the live-action treatment including “The Lion King,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Aladdin,” “Mulan,” “Dumbo” and “The Little Mermaid” to name a few. “Mufasa: The Lion King,” the prequel to the 2019 “The Lion King” remake, is set to debut in theaters December 20. Other live-action films such as “Snow White” and “Lilo & Stitch” will open in theaters in 2025 while “Moana” is set for 2026.
