After backlash to a confusing comment he made about Captain America, Anthony Mackie clarified his words on Instagram.
Anthony Mackie Talks Captain America
During an appearance promoting “Captain America: Brave New World” in Rome, Mackie spoke about what the character of Captain America represents. In a video first posted by The Redheads Diaries (@redheadsdiaries) on Instagram, Mackie said, “To me, Captain America represents a lot of different things and I don’t think the term ‘America’ should be one of those representations. It’s about a man who keeps his word, who has honor, dignity, and integrity. Someone who is trustworthy and dependable.”
As the clip went viral, many took issue with Mackie seemingly saying Captain America shouldn’t represent America. Mackie posted a clarifying statement on his Instagram Story, indicating he meant Captain America has “universal characteristics” and stating he is proud to be an American.
“Let me be clear about this,” Anthony Mackie wrote, “I’m a proud American and taking on the shield of a hero like CAP is the honor of a lifetime. I have the utmost respect for those who serve and have served our country. CAP has universal characteristics that people all over the world can relate to.”
Anthony Mackie, as Sam Wilson, took on the mantle of Captain America in “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” after Steve Rogers gifted him Cap’s shield in “Avengers: Endgame.”
“Captain America: Brave New World” also stars Danny Ramirez as Joaquin Torres / Falcon, taking over Sam Wilson’s former superhero mantle. Harrison Ford replaces the late William Hurt as Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, a.k.a. Red Hulk. Liv Tyler will reprise her role as Betty Ross and Tim Blake Nelson will return as Samuel Sterns / Leader, both appearing in the MCU for the first time since “The Incredible Hulk” (2008).
The cast also includes Carl Lumbly as Isaiah Bradley, Giancarlo Esposito as Seth Voelker / Sidewinder, and Shira Haas as Ruth Bat-Seraph. The film is directed by Julius Onah from a screenplay by Onah, Rob Edwards, Malcolm Spellman, Dalan Musson, and Peter Glanz. It’s produced by Kevin Feige and Nate Moore.
“Captain America: Brave New World” is in theaters on February 14, 2025.
