It’s the Halloween season, and you are trying to decide between a trip to Walt Disney World to experience Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party (aka MNSSHP) at Magic Kingdom or a trip to Disneyland Resort to experience Oogie Boogie Bash at Disney California Adventure. How are you ever going to choose between the two? I was able to attend both events this year, so I’m here to lay out the differences between the two events that will hopefully help you decide.

Treat Trails

The treat trails are very different experiences between these two events. At Oogie Boogie Bash, most treat trails are hosted by a villain character. While you can’t take a meet and greet photo with the characters because they are on stages, they do interact with guests as they walk through the lines, which makes for a really fun experience (and, of course, photos and videos are allowed).

At MNSSHP, treat trails are for candy only. While the trick-or-treating experience is fun, I found it hard to get to the characters, the treat trails, and the shows all in one night. That being said, I prefer the treat trail experience at Oogie Boogie Bash better.

Characters

Most of the rare villain characters are found in the treat trails at Oogie Boogie Bash, which is a big reason why it is so popular. A few don’t host these trails and are out solely for meet-and-greets (this year, for example, Lotso from Toy Story, Lightning McQueen, and Marvel characters in Avengers Campus, to name just a few). From my personal experience at both events, there are more characters overall at Oogie Boogie Bash.

At MNSSHP, most characters have their own designated meet and greet spot (check out your MNSSHP guide, which you can pick up upon entering the event), and you can hop in lines for those experiences. Lines for meet and greets are known to be long, so we recommend getting in line when the queues start opening up or during the parades/fireworks.

*PhotoPass is included with your ticket for both events!

Food and Dining

Currently, MNSSHP seems to have more fun food that’s exclusive to its event. I did find a lot more fun items at MNSSHP. As far as bookable dining goes, MNSSHP offers sit-down dining experiences at Cinderella’s Royal Table, Be Our Guest, and The Plaza Restaurant; plus, there are Dessert Viewing Parties that provide reserved viewing for the fireworks show.

in past years, Oogie Boogie Bash had a ton of exclusive food and treats, but last year and this year, there really wasn’t very much that was offered exclusively to the event. Oogie Boogie Bash offers Wine Country Trattoria dinner (where you will get reserved viewing for the parade) and there’s also a Dessert Party where you will enjoy delectable treats and beverages while enjoying the parade with preferred seating.

Shows/Entertainment

Oogie Boogie Bash has Villains Grove and the Frightfully Fun Parade. Both of these are so much fun, and you can read about them in my review here; however, MNSSHP takes the gold when it comes to shows and entertainment. Not only is Mickey’s Boo to You Parade longer and filled with more fun, but there are also Disney’s Not-So-Spooky Spectacular and the Hocus Pocus Villain Spelltacular, both of which completely blew me away!

Costumes

At both events, guests are encouraged to dress in Halloween costumes or in their Halloween finest. I personally feel like more people go all out with dressing in costume at Oogie Bash. This could be because it is still pretty hot and humid in Orlando in August-October.

So there you have it—the differences between Oogie Boogie Bash at Disney California Adventure and Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party at Magic Kingdom. Hopefully, my comparisons between both will help you decide what would be best for you and your family. Both events are sold out this season, but there’s always next year!
