One of the most iconic attractions in Walt Disney World history is officially going dark—again.
While it’s not the first time the Walt Disney World Railroad has hit the brakes, this one feels different. Disney just filed a construction permit for the Frontierland station, confirming what the company already shared: the ride that helped lay the foundation for Magic Kingdom is being partially shut down.
And this time, it’s going to be a while before we see things return to normal.

Frontierland Station Is Closing—Here’s What That Means
Beginning July 7, the Frontierland station of the Walt Disney World Railroad will close to guests, and the entire railroad will shift into what Disney calls “shuttle mode.” That means the train will no longer complete a full loop around the park. Instead, it’ll just move back and forth between the Main Street station and the Storybook Circus station in Fantasyland. Guests hoping for that classic grand circle tour will need to wait… potentially for years.
The newly filed permit—dated June 18—was issued to Disney’s own Buena Vista Construction Company and covers labor, material, and electrical work for the Frontierland station. And while the permit expires in June 2026, Disney hasn’t announced any timeline for reopening the Frontierland stop. That’s likely because this isn’t just a little touch-up job—this is the next step in a massive transformation of Magic Kingdom.
Frontierland’s Big Makeover Is Behind the Shutdown
If you’ve been following the changes coming to Frontierland, you know what’s going on here. The entire area is being reimagined. Tiana’s Bayou Adventure has already replaced Splash Mountain. The Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island, and Liberty Square Riverboat are closing. In their place, Disney is planning two new expansions: one themed to Pixar’s Cars franchise and the other shared to be the long-awaited Disney Villains land. All of this is happening right next to—or literally on top of—the Frontierland train station. It’s no surprise Disney needs to shut it down.

A Historic Attraction That Meant More Than Just a Ride
Still, it stings. The Walt Disney World Railroad is more than just a ride. It was one of the very first attractions completed at Magic Kingdom. Walt Disney himself was a railroad enthusiast, and trains have always played a special role in Disney theme parks. In many ways, the railroad is the beating heart of Magic Kingdom, looping around the lands and setting the tone for a day of adventure.
For longtime fans, this temporary shutdown—especially with no solid end in sight—feels like the loss of a park tradition. And while Disney says the railroad will continue to operate in a limited fashion, the closure of one of its key stations is yet another reminder of just how much Magic Kingdom is changing.
It’s Not the First Shutdown—But It Could Be the Longest
Of course, this isn’t the first time the railroad has gone into shuttle mode. It happened in the early 2010s during the construction of Storybook Circus. And the entire ride shut down for four years when TRON Lightcycle / Run was being built. So yes, the railroad always seems to come back—but the question now is: what version of Magic Kingdom will it return to?
With the Villains land and Cars expansion still without opening dates, Frontierland is going to be a construction zone for the foreseeable future. And while Disney fans always hold onto hope, it’s becoming clear that this ride, which helped build the Magic Kingdom we know and love, is being sidelined as the park prepares for a very different future.

Will the Full Loop Return Someday?
Probably. But for now, one of the most historic corners of Disney World is being boarded up—and the train is only running half the journey. For some fans, that’s a tough pill to swallow. The full loop might come back eventually, but what will Magic Kingdom look like when it does?
