Over the last several decades, Disney has really positioned its selection of theme parks as being incredible, once-in-a-lifetime experiences for families to visit and explore. Due to the sheer size, scale, and cost of a Disney vacation, guests often have very limited time and resources when it comes to visiting Disney.
On the flip side, many guests choose to visit places like Walt Disney World and Disneyland a few times each year, with annual passes being an extremely popular option for hardcore fans. Disney has also designed and created stunning new attractions for its theme parks, blending state-of-the-art technology and its own special brand of creativity to bring new and exciting experiences to its resorts, further enticing guests.
Examples of recent innovations inside the Disney theme parks include roller coasters like Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind and TRON Lightcycle / Run, as well as immersive dark rides like Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure and Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway.
Disney also innovates in more areas than just roller coasters and dark rides, with food also being a huge draw for many guests. Over the years, Disney has updated and refined its theme park offerings, with both sweet and savory dishes tempting guests during their day at Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, EPCOT, or Hollywood Studios.
However, one strange Disney food creation remains fascinating years after being discontinued.
Disney’s Handwich

Envisioned as a quick way for guests to grab a bite to eat, Disney introduced the Handwich in the late 1980s. Given how hectic a day at the Disney theme parks can be, the more portable, the better. But Disney’s Handwich was different in that it sought to provide guests with an entire meal in the palm of their hand.
The Handwich was made of a bread cone that came with one of four fillings: ham and cheese, pulled BBQ chicken, roast beef and cheddar, and tuna salad.
The idea for the Sandwich is credited to then-Disney CEO Michael Eisner, who, among other things, guided the company through some of its most transformational and uncertain periods. Under Eisner, Disney opened now-legendary rides and attractions like The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, Splash Mountain, and The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh.
The Handwich made its debut at several locations around Walt Disney World, including Tomorrowland and Adventureland at Magic Kingdom, as well as inside EPCOT’s The Land pavilion.

Unfortunately, the Handwich did not last long and was discontinued in the mid-1990s. However, fans have seen it brought back during special events, with the handheld item being offered during EPCOT’s 35th anniversary celebration back in 2017.
Bread lovers shouldn’t fret, as there are plenty of places to find traditional deli sandwiches. Earl of Sandwich at Disney Springs continues to be one of Disney’s most popular quick-service locations, though there are plenty of places all around “The Most Magical Place on Earth” to grab a sandwich.
Disney has shown continued creativity in recent expansions like Pandora—The World of Avatar and Galaxy’s Edge, introducing guests to items like Blue Milk and cheeseburger pods.
With more expansions on the horizon, it’s likely guests will see Disney continue to use creativity when developing tantalizing food and beverage options.
