Last year, Pirates of the Caribbean fans were searching for any information about when the film series would return. It had been seven years since the last Pirates movies, and fans hoped that Johnny Depp would return after his court battle with ex-wife Amber Heard.

At the same time, many fans were accusing The Walt Disney Company of having “gone woke” after it cast an African American to play Ariel in The Little Mermaid (2023) and Rachel Zegler, who is half Colombian, to play Snow White in the live-action film version. Fans were willing to believe anything negative about Disney at that time.

Enter Elon Musk. The owner of X (formerly Twitter) retweeted commentary to his millions of followers with the caption “Disney Sucks.”

The report said that Disney was considering replacing Depp with actress Ayo Edebiri playing the leading role. The backlash against Disney was immediate and harsh. Musk has since deleted the post, but the damage was done.

Depp fans attacked the decision and, once again, accused Disney of being “woke.” Fans also attacked Edebiri, the award-winning actress from FX’s The Bear.

There was one slight problem with that post: it was entirely fictitious. Edebiri came out this week and said that she knew nothing about being considered for Pirates, and she received some vicious threats as a result of Musk spreading lies about her. She wrote:

Just remembering when I got some of the most insane death threats and racial slurs of my life (idk if it’s the #1 moment, but for sure top 3) for a fake reboot of a movie I had never even heard of because of this man.

She also referred to Musk as a “fascist” and an “idiot” for spreading fake information about her. She ended her post with, “But life is a gift.”

Edebiri is a rising star in Hollywood. She has won multiple awards for her portrayal of Sydney in the hit TV series The Bear and voiced Envy in Pixar’s billion-dollar hit Inside Out 2 (2024).

Rumors have circulated that Disney is considering bringing Depp back for another Pirates film, but neither side has made any announcement yet.

What do you think of fans sending death threats to Ayo Edebiri over a fake news post by Elon Musk?
