What is Disney really doing with the Muppets? Of all the intellectual properties that Disney owns, the Jim Henson creations seem to get the least amount of love from the Mouse House, despite an overwhelming fan response to the Muppets.

Earlier this year, Disney stripped away the Muppets from Disney’s Hollywood Studios when it closed Muppet Vision 3D, the last attraction that Jim Henson worked on before his death. Disney decided to appease the Muppets’ rabid fanbase by moving them across the park to take over the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster.

It’s been 14 years since The Muppets (2011) hit the big screen. Sure, they returned with 2014’s Muppets Most Wanted, but that sequel failed to capture the Muppets’ core audience. It’s also been 44 years since The Muppet Show left television.

The beloved variety show was the first time that most Americans met the Muppets, and it brought together the Jim Henson creations with some of Hollywood’s biggest stars, including Julie Andrews, Christopher Reeve, Gene Kelly, Elton John, Diana Ross, Harry Belafonte, Steve Martin, and George Burns.

Nearly half a century later, The Muppet Show could be returning to Disney+, bringing smiles to every Gen X kid who grew up on the show. According to a new rumor, Disney is rebooting the show, and it could start filming later this month for a 2026 release on Disney’s streaming service.

According to this new rumor, The Muppet Show is being developed by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg of Point Grey Pictures. Disney has been trying to work with Rogen’s production company for years. There were rumors that Point Grey Pictures was developing a Figment feature film before Disney CEO Bob Iger said the project was being shelved or possibly turned into a Disney+ series.

There have been rumors about Disney rebooting the Muppets in the past, but this time, the rumor seems to have legs. According to several trade magazines, Disney is using a studio on the 20th Century Studios Lots, and Jim Henson Productions and The Muppets are listed as working on that project.

Disney has not made an official announcement about the Muppets’ return, but this time, it feels real and could help revive some great childhood memories. So, hold onto your hats because it’s almost time for The Muppets Show tonight.
