The new Disney+ series Star Wars: Skeleton Crew not only dives deep into the galaxy far, far away, but also provides some welcome nostalgia for Disney Parks fans. The new series, now streaming, follows a group of children who discover a hidden spaceship and take off on an unforgettable adventure.

Set in the Star Wars universe, the first four episodes unveiled hidden connections to various attractions at Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort. From iconic droids to swashbuckling pirates, Skeleton Crew creates a bridge connecting generations of fans to the magic of both Disney and Star Wars.

One of the first Skeleton Crew Easter eggs was the introduction of an RX droid, serving as the school bus driver for the main characters. Dubbed RX-24, this model is a direct descendant of the pilot droid featured in the classic Star Tours attraction, which debuted at Disneyland Park in 1987 and spread its reach to other locations, including Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Tokyo Disneyland.

These days, Star Tours’ RX droid, known lovingly by fans as “Rex,” has found new employment as a DJ at the cantina in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. The original voice of RX-24, Paul Reubens (or, as you might know him, Pee-wee Herman), returned to reprise his role.

Homage to Captain EO and Fuzzball

In the second episode of the Lucasfilm series, the kids spot a fuzzy red alien with butterfly wings while visiting a busy spaceport. If that creature looks familiar, you might have visited Disneyland Park or EPCOT in the late 1980s!

The Skeleton Crew creature is the same species as Fuzzball, a character who accompanied Michael Jackson in the Captain EO short film, which premiered at Disneyland Park and EPCOT Center in 1986.

Sound Cues from Pirates of the Caribbean

While visuals often capture audiences’ attention, sound plays an equally vital role in storytelling. Skeleton Crew cleverly integrates auditory references, most notably through a memorable sound cue reminiscent of the beloved Pirates of the Caribbean attraction.

In a particular scene within the second episode, the kids find themselves in a prison, where they hear a distant whistling sound. Disney Parks fans might notice that it’s the exact sound in the Pirates of the Caribbean jail scene when imprisoned animatronics aim to coax a key-holding dog.
