The Walt Disney World Resort is being relentless when it comes to closures in 2025, and now another part of Magic Kingdom will go dark later this month.
On January 6, Magic Kingdom Park lost Big Thunder Mountain Railroad to a more-than-a-year-long refurbishment that will see some “new magic” make its way into the attraction. Already construction crews are tearing up the iconic roller coaster track, with guests able to see it being lifted high over Frontierland.
It wasn’t the only attraction to close this January either. From permanent closures in Disney’s Animal Kingdom to make way for the Tropical Americas to the seasonal shutdown of Kali River Rapids and the maintenance of Gran Fiesta Tour Starring The Three Caberellos, much is afoot at The Most Magical Place On Earth.
Just recently, another quiet operational change hit Disney World with the early closure of The Seas with Nemo & Friends inside EPCOT’s World Nature neighborhood. There is no official word on why the location—which includes the SeaBase Aquarium—is now closing at 7 p.m. instead of 9 p.m., but reports indicate it could be related to the extensive alterations being made to the attraction’s interior.
The latest update comes from Magic Kingdom, where the iconic Dumbo the Flying Elephant attraction will face partial closure commencing on January 27, 2025.
“The indoor children’s playground in the Dumbo the Flying Elephant queue will close for refurbishment on January 27, 2025, and is expected to reopen in Spring 2025.” The official Walt Disney World Resort website reads. “The attraction will remain open and available during this time.”
This means that the actual ride will not be shuttered, but the indoor playground featured in the attraction’s queue area will. The playground is popular with families and children, allowing kids to climb, play, and socialize in an air-conditioned space. It also gives parents the chance to catch a breather while their children run riot.
It was in May 2024 that the Storybook Circus area received the Smellephants on Parade update. Guests can collect a map and sticker sheet from Big Top Souvenirs and hunt through Storybook Circus finding all the Smellephant statues.
