Disneyland Resort abruptly shut down its version of the Pirates of the Caribbean ride on Wednesday, December 11. The closure occurred amid ongoing conversations about the decades-old attraction’s place in the modern-day Disney parks.

Discussions about Pirates of the Caribbean began in the mid-2010s when Walt Disney Imagineering announced that it would update the bride auction scene. Once objectified, brides-for-sale became independent, adventurous pirates selling chickens. While some Disney Parks fans were happy to see a feminist twist on the Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort rides, others felt the historic attractions should remain the same.

The background is lit with a blue hue, giving a ghostly, eerie atmosphere. The scene is part of the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Magic Kingdom.

Years later, some theme park guests feel Walt Disney Imagineers didn’t take changes to Pirates of the Caribbean far enough. In 2023, a woman went viral after she said the New Orleans Square attraction was “kind of weird” and “rapey.” Other women recalled feeling gawked at by the male pirate animatronics.

“It feels like we’re the entertainment for them and I do not like it,” one TikTok user wrote. Another said she felt “violated” on the boat ride.

Nevertheless, Pirates of the Caribbean entertains thousands of guests daily at Disneyland Park, Magic Kingdom Park, Disneyland Paris, and Tokyo Disneyland. Unfortunately, with such a high traffic volume, things sometimes go wrong!

On December 11, Redditor u/Recovery37 shared this photo of guests evacuating the Pirates of the Caribbean ride building after it shut down. Guests were still stuck on boats after the attraction had “issues” leading to its temporary closure:

It’s unclear what caused this abrupt closure of Pirates of the Caribbean. Attraction closures are often attributed to technical issues or guest misbehavior, like dropping items in the ride water.

Pirates of the Caribbean eventually reopened, and holiday crowds flocked to the Disneyland Park attraction. “I don’t think the posted 20 minute wait is right,” u/whyisreplicainmyname commented. “Queue is packed.”
