In 1932, Disney introduced audiences to a brand-new, albeit minor character, named Dippy Dawg in Mickey’s Revue. Dippy Dawg appeared in five more Mickey Mouse films, but then he was redesigned and renamed in 1934, and the iconic character Goofy was born. Goofy quickly became a beloved member of Mickey’s gang and is now one of the core Fab Five, which also consists of Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, and Pluto.

Since Goofy’s official Disney introduction nearly 100 years ago, Goofy has starred in more than 50 solo short films, six films alongside Donald Duck, more than a dozen television specials, and has made seven cameos in other Disney films.

Then, in 1995, Goofy starred in his very own feature-length feature film, A Goofy Movie. The movie tells the story of Goofy and his teenage son Max, who venture on a zany cross-country fishing trip. Goofy is worried that Max is becoming a juvenile delinquent, meanwhile, Max just wants to relax during his summer break and work on dating his crush, Roxanne.

A Goofy Movie features a ton of great songs and introduces the much-loved fictional pop star Powerline. It didn’t perform very well at the box office, but still lives in the hearts of many Disney millennials and is considered by many to be a cult-classic.

Five years after the release of A Goofy Movie, Disney created a sequel film that went straight to DVD — An Extremely Goofy Movie.

Last year, we learned that Disney was getting ready to release a brand-new movie around one of Disney’s favorite dogs. But it would not be another Goofy Movie sequel. No, this time it would be a documentary about the making of the iconic 1995 animated film.

Not Just A Goof tells the story of the ragtag group of fairly green filmmakers who were brought together in order to create a new movie about one of Mickey’s best friends.

Here is more on the film from the documentary’s website:

In 2022, directors Christopher Ninness and Eric Kimelton set out to make a simple documentary about their favorite Disney film. Then they discovered the complex power of art, and how a character as silly as Goofy can mean so much to so many people. So begins the untold story behind that unlikely cult-classic, A Goofy Movie. This captivating account reveals how a team of untested young filmmakers took on the challenge of building their first feature around an iconic Disney character, without realizing the obstacles, clashes, and victories awaiting them. Through interviews with the key figures involved in A Goofy Movie’s creation, as well as rare, previously unreleased archival footage and stunning animation, Ninness and Kimelton’s film gets inside the studio’s inner workings and provides an unfiltered perspective on behind-the-scenes magic. It’s a must-watch for Disney enthusiasts young and old.
