In 2011, Disney and Marvel brought Captain America to the big screen in Captain America: The First Avenger. The film starred Chris Evans as Steve Rogers, a young man who desperately wanted to join the Army and fight in World War II. Sadly, Steve never passes his physical, but his dedication impresses members of the government who want to create a “super soldier.” Steve chooses to put his life on the line to become a super soldier, and Captain America is born.

While Steve is willing to do what it takes, his best friend, Bucky Barnes, doesn’t want anything to happen to him. Bucky is taken as a prisoner of war, and Steve does everything it takes to get his friend back. Sadly, Bucky has been tortured and isn’t the man he once was. He is even turned into a villain — The Winter Soldier — which forces Steve to choose between his friend and his fellow Avengers.

Bucky Barnes was played by Sebastian Stan, who reprised the role multiple times. Bucky was a key character in Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Captain America: Civil War (2016), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Avengers: Endgame (2019), and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

Sebastian Stan’s portrayal of Bucky Barnes catapulted his career, and he has since starred in scores of films and television shows, including ABC’s hit show, Once Upon a Time, The Martian (2015), I, Tonya (2017), Pam & Tommy (2022), and Dumb Money (2023).

Most recently, he portrayed a young Donald Trump in the new movie The Apprentice, which was released earlier this month. The film tells the story of how a young Trump started and built his real estate business in the 1970s and 80s with the help of crooked lawyer, Roy Cohn (played by Jeremy Strong).

The film recently premiered at the BFI London Film Festival, and Mr. Stan was asked whether the film could sway American voters because it was released so close to the presidential election. The actor then revealed that the former President had been trying to censor the movie, while also boasting about the importance of free speech.

Mr. Stan said:

“If you have any inkling of interest, go and really ask yourself: ‘Who is this man? Do you really know? Do you really trust this person to lead a country?’ He’s been trying to censor this movie, and at the same time, he claims that he acknowledges free speech … I can’t think of anything more hypocritical. So at the end of the day, it’s about him as a character. Forget the politics and just go in there and use your instinct and ask yourself: Do you trust this man? That’s what the movie is about.”

The former President has repeatedly attacked the new movie, calling it a “cheap, defamatory, and politically disgusting hatchet job.” He said that the film was released when it was because the filmmakers wanted to try to influence voters.

Stan has several projects lined up, including returning as Bucky Barnes in Marvel’s Thunderbolts*, which is set to be released on May 2, 2025. The film also sees the return of Florence Pugh as Elena Belova, David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov, AKA Red Guardian, Wyatt Russell as John Walker (the fake Captain America), Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster, and Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost.

Thunderbolts* is Marvel’s equivalent of DC’s Suicide Squad (2016). The government brings these anti-heroes together to go on secret missions.

The Apprentice is currently being shown in select theaters nationwide.
