Luke Skywalker has been the heart of Star Wars since the original 1977 film. Mark Hamill’s portrayal has spanned the classic trilogy, the sequels, and even recent shows using CGI de-aging technology. Yet despite his lasting connection, questions about Luke’s future in the franchise have remained.
Hamill’s character closed a major chapter in Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017), and his recent appearances have been limited to flashbacks and cameos. Fans have speculated whether Luke might return in upcoming projects or if his journey has truly ended.

Mark Hamill Confirms He’s Moving On
In a recent interview with ComicBook.com, Hamill reflected on his Star Wars legacy: “I am so grateful to George [Lucas] for letting me be a part of that back in the day … We never expected it to become a permanent franchise and a part of pop culture.”
He went on to clarify, “But my deal is, I had my time. I’m appreciative of that, but I really think they should focus on the future and all the new characters.”
Hamill doubled down on this in a preview clip from an upcoming Sunday Sitdown interview with Willie Geist (via TODAY). “Well, let me say: they haven’t asked me,” he said. “It’s not like they said, ‘Please come back.’”

He continued, “I don’t want to make a big PR pronouncement like ‘This is my decision.’ I’m just saying that it really felt like a conclusion. My character was given complete closure. I died, ironically by overdosing on the Force, I might point out.”
This clarity from Hamill signals a respectful farewell to Luke Skywalker’s central role in Star Wars storytelling.
‘Star Wars’ Focuses on a New Generation
Lucasfilm is charting a new course with fresh stories and characters. The upcoming New Jedi Order film starring Daisy Ridley reportedly won’t feature Luke, although his legacy will remain influential. Kathleen Kennedy, Lucasfilm president, explained, “I don’t know if we’ll spend a lot of time in flashbacks or Force ghosts or things like that, but certainly the spirit of what [Luke Skywalker] represents to [Rey] is going to be significant.”

Shows like The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett, plus upcoming films such as Star Wars: Starfighter, highlight this shift away from original trilogy protagonists.
Among fans, there is debate about whether Luke should ever return in live-action. Some suggest recasting the character rather than relying on CGI de-aging technology. Sebastian Stan’s name frequently arises as a possible new Luke.
