A South Korean court has upheld the firing of a government official who took an unauthorized vacation to Walt Disney World during a business trip in the United States.

According to The Korea Herald, an official representing the state-run Korean Internet and Security Agency was visiting the United States for a total of nine days to attend an international conference in Orlando, Florida. However, during their visit, the individual took a trip to the Walt Disney World Resort, something that was verified by videos they themselves recorded and uploaded to the internet.

The incident took place in September 2022, with video footage of the Disney World trip being shared and uploaded on YouTube as well as the blog owned by the individual’s spouse, serving as evidence in the case.

The former employee was accused of leaving the workplace without permission, engaging in private activities banned by public officials, and misusing work hours.

In an attempt to challenge their termination, the former employee filed a complaint with the court, claiming their Disney World trip occurred during free time and not during working hours. The individual argued the trip should be considered a private activity. The former official also argued that the videos uploaded to YouTube did not generate any income.

This counter case was dismissed by the Gwangju Court, in a new ruling released Thursday. A judge argued that the original conference schedule had not been altered or canceled, meaning they should have been in a meeting when they were actually in Disney World.

The court ruling also stated that the former official’s actions have the possibility to damage public trust in the South Korean government.

In other Disney-related news, both Florida and California theme park resorts are set to receive quite a few upgrades in the coming years. Disney’s Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, and Hollywood Studios will all soon embark on some of the park’s most ambitious projects to date, such as a new land based on Pixar’s Monsters Inc., as well as a brand-new Cars expansion.

A number of rides and attractions will receive updates in Disneyland, including the iconic Matterhorn Bobsleds. This roller coaster has entertained guests for decades and is set to endure an extensive refurbishment, according to a recently discovered permit.

Outside of refurbishments, Disneyland will also soon be expanding its reach quite literally, with a brand new land based on James Cameron’s Avatar franchise. Just like Walt Disney World, Disneyland will soon be home to its own slice of Pandora, the alien planet that acts as the backdrop to Disney’s two record-breaking, box-office-smashing Avatar films.

The project was announced earlier in 2024 and has been divisive, with some fans arguing Pandora doesn’t fit into Disneyland. Others are quite excited by the thought of getting to explore Pandora on the West Coast, with Disney’s original Florida version proving to be incredibly popular.
