Over the last decade, Disney has made live-action remakes of its classic movies a top priority, with the company churning out at least one a year for the better part of a decade. While these films continue to be cash cows for Disney, especially releases like The Lion King, fans are becoming more and more divided with each new live-action announcement.

Each of these films is met with instant excitement, but skepticism seems to slowly seep in, with a significant amount of pushback forming around 2023’s The Little Mermaid.

However, none of Disney’s live-action projects has faced as much scrutiny as its modernized version of Snow White, which debuted to mixed reviews.

Snow White debuted with a “rotten” score on the popular review-aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes, with the film currently sitting at 48%. The film has not officially been released yet, meaning these reviews, which there are 80, are exclusively from professional critics.

Few, if any, Disney films have endured as much criticism and controversy as Disney’s 2025 remake of Snow White, with much of the limelight finding itself on its two leads, Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot. Both of these actresses have been highly successful in Hollywood but have been attacked for their comments ahead of the film’s release.

Zegler, in particular, caused somewhat of an online meltdown last year during various press events and red carpets, suggesting that Snow White didn’t actually need a prince and that Disney’s 1937 classic was outdated.

Gadot, on the other hand, has faced scrutiny for her stance on the ongoing conflict in the Middle East between Palestine and Israel, with the actress firmly planting her mouth and feet on the latter’s side.

While these issues may or may not affect Snow White‘s overall box office performance, it’s clear that many may be coming into the film already agitated.

Snow White is not the only live-action remake hitting theaters this year. Disney recently released the first official trailer for its newly imagined Lilo & Stitch. Like the long list of remakes before it, Lilo & Stitch appears to be a fairly simple retelling of the classic animated film, only with enhanced visual effects and live-action actors.

Disney is also currently in production on a live-action Moana film. If this seems like a rather quick turnaround, it is, as the original Moana was released less than a decade ago. Disney released Moana 2 last year, a film that blew up both the box office and the company’s streaming platform, Disney+.

Snow White releases in theaters on March 21, 2025.
