In a new piece from IGN, Disneyland President Thomas Mazloum recently teased the resort’s upcoming Avatar expansion, saying, “It’s going to be extremely unique and a place unlike anything you’ve ever seen before.” Disney announced the expansion back during its 2024 D23 conference. A number of projects were revealed during the show, with the company confirming its plans to construct a West Coast Pandora.
“It’s just absolutely incredible,” continued Mazloum, “and it will take the entire resort to a complete new level again.”
The large expansion includes a new parking structure as well as a new transportation hub. To make way for Pandora, Disneyland will be saying goodbye to its Monsters Inc.-themed dark ride, Mike and Sully to the Rescue.
Disneyland announced the closure of Monsters Inc. Mike & Sully to the Rescue earlier this summer. While it will have just turned 20 years old at the time of its closure, the dark ride is not original to Disney California Adventure. Mike and Sully were retrofitted onto an existing attraction, Superstar Limo, a ride that lasted just a single year at the park.
Guests panned Superstar Limo for its cheesy story and characters and overall lack of fun factor. As a quick fix, Disneyland brought the world of Pixar’s Monsters Inc. to the ride, retheming and overhauling it into the classic attraction fans know today.

Disney first dipped its toes into the world of James Cameron’s Avatar universe in 2017, when it opened Pandora – The World of Avatar at its Animal Kingdom theme park in Florida. The land is one of Disney’s most impressive and immersive to date, featuring jaw-dropping views and some incredibly advanced attractions.
Disneyland’s version of Pandora is expected to also be immersive, though it’s doubtful it will be as expansive as Walt Disney World’s. At least one water attraction ride has been teased for Disneyland’s Pandora, but exact details remain a mystery.
