As we’ve just reported, the National Weather Service (NWS) in Melbourne has issued another fire weather watch for Orange County, home to both Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando Resort. Now, we have confirmation that the weather is having a direct impact on Disney World operations.

Fire Weather Watch in Effect
The latest Fire Weather Watch was posted for Orange County on March 16, and it will remain in effect through the evening of March 17. This weather watch is a signal that current conditions are ideal for fires to spread—especially with low humidity levels and steady, gusty winds.
This isn’t the first time a fire watch has been issued in the region. On March 5, a similar warning was issued, and that was eventually upgraded to a Red Flag Warning for Central Florida, indicating critical fire weather conditions. The current situation, combined with high winds, presents a continuing threat to the region’s fire safety.
Earlier today, the NWS also issued a wind advisory for East Central Florida, including the Orlando area. Sustained winds of 15–25 mph are expected, with gusts reaching as high as 35 mph. Temperatures in Orlando are expected to reach the mid-80s today, with slightly cooler temperatures forecasted for Monday.
With this heightened concern for wildfire danger, the NWS has again shared wildfire safety graphics, urging the public to take care. They recommend avoiding outdoor burning activities—such as grilling or having a campfire—at both Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando Resort. Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort, known for its outdoor campfires, is also affected by the weather conditions. Guests are encouraged to be mindful of their surroundings, properly dispose of cigarettes, avoid activities with open flames, and keep vehicles off dry grass to help minimize the risk of wildfires.
Disney Adjusts Operations for Guest Safety
Though Disney has not shut down its theme parks due to these warnings, some operations have been altered for the safety of guests. A prime example of these adjustments occurred last night at EPCOT.
Guests in the area quickly took to Reddit to inquire about the status of EPCOT’s nightly fireworks spectacular, Luminous. One guest posted:
“Are the EPCOT fireworks for tonight canceled or postponed? I’m not in the parks but at a spot to view the EPCOT fireworks and they did not start at 9PM. Can someone at the parks confirm if they were postponed or canceled?”
As it turns out, the fireworks display was indeed modified. Another fan responded:
“Modified show with no fireworks due to high winds.”
So, why did Disney decide to cancel the fireworks?
Safety Concerns at the Heart of the Decision

The decision to cancel fireworks during Luminous is based on safety concerns, which are always a top priority for Disney. Fireworks are inherently dangerous, and strong winds can cause them to behave unpredictably. If the winds are too high, fireworks can be launched at the wrong angle or fail to reach the intended altitude, creating a significant risk to the safety of both guests and cast members.
Moreover, fireworks don’t just disappear after they explode. They leave behind debris, and when the wind picks up, that debris can be carried much farther than expected. If this happens, it could land in areas where guests are gathered, potentially causing injury or even sparking a fire. Disney has a strict policy of not taking these kinds of risks, opting instead to prioritize guest safety.
Additionally, the sound and visual effects of the fireworks are directly impacted by the wind. The trajectory of the fireworks can be altered, which can cause the show to feel disjointed. Even the audio can be distorted when wind speeds affect the overall synchronization between music and fireworks, leading to a less-than-optimal experience for guests.
Finally, Disney has to adhere to local regulations and safety codes, which may require the cancellation of fireworks shows if the weather conditions exceed certain thresholds. Given that Orlando is currently under a fire weather watch, it’s highly likely that Disney’s operational decisions are informed by these factors to avoid any liability and to ensure a safe and magical experience for all.
The Possibility of More Cancellations Tonight
Given that the wildfire warning is still in effect through tomorrow and gusty winds are expected to continue in the Orlando area, it’s possible that we may see similar modifications or cancellations tonight. If the wind conditions do not improve, there could be changes to the evening’s fireworks shows across the parks, as Disney will prioritize safety for both its guests and the surrounding environment.
As always, Disney works hard to deliver exceptional experiences, and even though weather can sometimes impact operations, their commitment to safety and the well-being of guests is always their first priority.
While the lack of fireworks can be disappointing, it’s a reminder that Disney’s magic isn’t just in the shows, but in their dedication to making sure every guest is safe, no matter the conditions. Stay tuned for updates as the situation evolves and keep an eye on the weather—Disney will be sure to inform guests of any further changes to the schedule.
