Disney on Ice is facing scrutiny on social media after a viral video called the traveling show’s dress code into question. A woman was furious after finding out she couldn’t wear a costume while accompanying her four-year-old to the performance.
On June 27, Phoebe Parsons (@phoebeparsons__ on TikTok) posted this video highlighting a policy listed in the Frequently Asked Questions section of the Disney on Ice website. The rule prohibits ticketholders over 14 from wearing costumes to performances, like Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort, which ban costumes for guests 14 and older.

“Disney on Ice… you have some explaining to do,” Parsons captioned her video.

“What is this rule?” Parsons asked in the video. “Are you telling me that a 35-year-old Disney enthusiast who is accompanying a four-year-old child to Disney on Ice is not allowed to dress up? Have you seen what’s going on in the world at the moment? Do you know how little we have to be excited about and look forward to, and you’re telling me that I cannot come dressed as a f**king princess?”
Many commenters pointed out that the rule is in place to protect the magic for little ones and to keep everyone safe.
“You can dress up, just not wear a costume, it’s to stop adults being confused as staff,” @kimmyj308 wrote. “It really is a safety measure to protect children from possible unsafe people pretending to be staff.”

In an interview with Kidspot, Parsons said it felt like “a bit of the magic got gatekept.”
“Do I think adults should be able to dress up with their kids? Within reason, yes,” she said. “If a mum or a big sister wants to wear a matching Elsa cape, why not? It’s harmless fun. The world’s heavy enough, let people do things that fill them with joy. Even if it’s wearing a tiara at 35.”
Some social media users suggested that Parsons look into Disney Bounding, a trend where Disney Park guests dress in colorful outfits inspired by their favorite characters without wearing costumes.

“You can still dress up in theme such as wearing colours to resemble ariel but not actually dress up as her,” @hamiltontheaussieversion commented.
“You can dress up a little,” @kennedyharlow echoed. “You just can’t put on a full length Elsa gown and sign autographs in the parking lot.”
Still, others found it strange that an adult would want to dress up for Disney on Ice.

“It’s not all about you get a grip be a adult and let ya kids enjoy it,” @zanew666 wrote.
“There’s literally no reason for you to dress up babes just your 4 year old dressing up as a princess is just fine,” said @sienna383838.
Costumes are prohibited for Disney on Ice guests over 14, but adults can wear Mickey ears, tiaras, and as much Disney clothing as they like! If you think a little one could mistake you for a real character in your outfit, you’ll need to choose something else.
