Something is stirring over in World Celebration, and this time it’s not another festival food booth or new character experience.

EPCOT fans may have noticed a recent uptick in behind-the-scenes activity around one of the park’s most iconic attractions. From social media chatter to early park entry schedules, there’s been a shift. And whenever Disney starts adjusting schedules quietly, it usually means something is about to change in a big way.

If you’ve visited EPCOT lately, you might have sensed it yourself. That massive geosphere at the park’s entrance, home to Spaceship Earth, has been quietly running business as usual—but not for long. Cast Members have started fielding questions. Park maps and refurbishment calendars are being scrutinized. And longtime Disney goers are starting to whisper the one thing every fan dreads: closure.

We’re not talking about a ride down for a few hours due to technical issues. This time, Disney has officially confirmed what many suspected—and it’s going to impact your next trip more than you might expect.

Spaceship Earth Will Temporarily Close Starting August 25

Disney has confirmed that Spaceship Earth will close for refurbishment beginning August 25, 2025. While Disney has emphasized this is a temporary closure, the company has not shared a specific reopening date, which is what has many fans raising their eyebrows.

The phrase “later this year” has been used, but without a solid return window, that leaves quite a bit of room for interpretation. In fact, Disney’s official calendar runs through October 3—and as of now, there is no listed return time for Spaceship Earth. That detail alone has some guests wondering if this closure might extend further than expected.

Disney Says It’s Just a Refurb—But Fans Are Curious

According to Disney’s official messaging, this is part of a standard maintenance cycle meant to keep the ride operating safely and efficiently. Spaceship Earth is over 40 years old, after all. Since its debut in 1982, the ride has taken millions of guests through the timeline of human communication—from ancient cave paintings to the digital age—without changing much of its core ride system.

That kind of legacy attraction needs some regular TLC to keep running smoothly. Animatronics require touch-ups, lighting needs adjusting, and ride systems have to be kept up to modern standards. Disney performs this sort of work all the time, often rotating refurbishments throughout the year. Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin has already closed for a lengthy refurbishment, and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is currently undergoing a long-term closure as well.

Still, the length and vague language surrounding this specific closure is what’s getting attention.

Could This Be the First Step Toward a Larger Overhaul?

Before the pandemic, Disney had revealed ambitious plans to overhaul Spaceship Earth, including updated narration, enhanced visuals, and a storyline centered around storytelling itself rather than just communication. Those plans were shelved indefinitely once the parks closed in 2020, but many fans still wonder whether Disney might revive them under the radar.

While there’s no official sign of that just yet, the ride’s aging infrastructure and status as the literal centerpiece of EPCOT make it a prime candidate for something more substantial down the line. The park’s broader transformation—which has included a new nighttime show, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, and the Moana-inspired Journey of Water—has made clear that Disney is reimagining the future of EPCOT. Spaceship Earth, being such a visible part of the park’s identity, will likely play a role in that continued evolution.

And if you’re hoping for a clue in the construction signage or Cast Member uniforms—don’t hold your breath. Disney is keeping this one close to the vest for now.

How Long Will Spaceship Earth Actually Be Closed?

Here’s what we know: Disney has confirmed the August 25 start date and has said that Spaceship Earth will reopen “later this year.” Most experts expect a turnaround in the range of 6 to 12 weeks if it truly is just routine maintenance. That would put the reopening somewhere in late October or early November—right in time for the busy holiday season at EPCOT.

But if Disney decides to tack on even minor upgrades or unforeseen issues arise, those timelines could shift. Given the ride’s complexity and age, even standard updates can be tricky. And if Disney decides to sneak in even a few of the changes originally planned in 2020—like updated scenes or refreshed narration—that timeline could stretch further.

For reference, the Astro Orbiter in Magic Kingdom was closed for around five months during its refurbishment this year, closing in mid-January and not reopening until mid-June, so it’s not out of the question to think that Spaceship Earth could be closed for at least a couple of months, and potentially longer.

So while Disney says “just a refurb,” the ride’s importance, age, and lack of a concrete return date leave the door wide open to something more.
