It’s been 40 years since Back to the Future first arrived in theaters. Four decades since Hill Valley teen Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) hopped into the DeLorean to time-travel from 1985 to 1955 to save his friend, genius inventor Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd), and make sure that his parents, George McFly (Crispin Glover) and Lorraine Baines (Lea Thompson), fall in love so that he isn’t erased from existence!

The Legacy of Back to the Future (1985)

Directed by Robert Zemeckis (also co-writer) and co-written by Bob Gale, Back to the Future is considered one of the greatest films of all time.

It became the highest-grossing film worldwide of 1985, with audiences and critics praising the story, soundtrack, performances, and special effects. It also received several award nominations and won an Academy Award, three Saturn Awards, and a Hugo Award.

Back to the Future (1985) was followed by two sequels, Back to the Future Part II (1989) and Back to the Future Part III (1990), and spawned a multimedia franchise that includes an animated television series, video games, theme park rides, a long-running comic book series from IDW Publishing, and the stage production Back to the Future: The Musical.

Now, in celebration of Back to the Future‘s 40th anniversary, Universal Pictures is re-releasing the film in theaters this October 31. A trailer has been released to mark the announcement, and along with several iconic scenes from the 1985 film, it features a brief but epic electric guitar rendition of the iconic Back to the Future theme by Alan Silvestri.

Will There Be a New Back to the Future Movie?

Bob Gale has expressed on many occasions how he feels about the idea of a new Back to the Future film, whether a sequel, a reboot, or other. Earlier this year, while speaking speaking at Universal Fan Fest Nights (via People), he said, “I don’t know why they keep talking about that! I mean, do they think that if they say it enough times, we’re going to actually do it?”

“I mean, it’s like they know in every interview, people say, ‘Oh Bob, when is there going to be a Back to the Future 4?’ Never,” he continued. “‘When is there going to be a prequel?’ Never. ‘When is there going to be a spinoff?’ Never. It’s just fine the way it is. It’s not perfect, but as Bob [Robert] Zemeckis used to say, ‘It’s perfect enough.’”

So, it seems Gale is happy enough for new audiences to discover Back to the Future. “What’s so great is seeing the next generation of kids that are being touched by this and [say], ‘Gee, my parents were once kids,’” he said. “That’s why I think it keeps on going, because every kid comes to that realization at some point, and we made a movie about that. So I love the fact that people are newly discovering it.”

While director/co-writer Robert Zemeckis has also made his feelings on the matter clear many times, he previously admitted that he’d like to direct a big-screen adaptation of the critically acclaimed, award-winning Back to the Future: The Musical, saying, “I would like to do Back to the Future: The Musical. I would love to do that. I think that would be great.”
