“You don’t need money, don’t take fame. Don’t need no credit card to ride this train. It’s strong and it’s sudden, and it’s cruel sometimes. But it might just save your life. That’s the power of love.”
If you recognize these words from the hit song “Power of Love” by Huey Lewis and the News, then you probably know that it is the song most closely associated with the iconic 1985 film Back to the Future.
Back to the Future starred Christopher Lloyd as Doc Brown, an eccentric scientist who builds a time machine out of a DeLorean. He is friends with high school slacker Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox), who can’t believe what he is seeing. It’s a strange friendship but one of mutual respect, which means a lot to Marty, considering his less-than-stellar home life.
When the Libyans come after Doc Brown for stealing from them, Marty finds himself using the time machine and sending himself back to 1955. There, he meets a young Doc Brown and even his mom and dad, whom he must help fall in love with, or he will cease to exist.
The movie was an instant hit, becoming the most popular film worldwide in 1985. Its popularity propelled Universal to make two more films: Back to the Future Part II, in which Marty travels forward to 2015 and then back to 1955, and Back to the Future Part III, in which Marty must head to the Old West to save his genius friend.
Ever since the last Back to the Future movie was released in 1990, fans have been begging Universal to continue the saga and create a fourth film. However, a lot has changed in 35 years, and it seems unlikely that will happen. Sadly, in 1991, when he was just 30 years old, Michael J. Fox was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. He now struggles to walk without assistance.
And if you were to ask BTTF co-creator, writer, and producer Bob Gale about a fourth film, he would have two words for you — “F*** you.”
Gale was attending the Saturn Awards after receiving the George Pal Memorial Award when he spoke about the franchise.
“People always say, ‘When are you going to do ‘Back to the Future 4’ and we say, ‘F*** you.’”
Bob Gale is not the only Back to the Future bigwig to discuss a potential fourth movie. In November, producer Robert Zemeckis said he has been approached multiple times about a fourth film, but he always thought the franchise was meant to be a trilogy. He said another film is “not in the cards,” and fans can just enjoy the original three films.
The original films have also inspired a hit Broadway musical, and there are also plans for a stage production aboard select Royal Caribbean cruises. Gale further revealed that he is currently helping Michael J. Fox write a book about his time working on the films.
Would you love to see Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd return for Back to the Future Part IV? Or is the trilogy perfect as is?
