Adults are famously barred from riding one attraction at Universal Orlando Resort – but it’s not for the reason you may think.
Pteranodon Flyers, a family-friendly attraction in the Jurassic Park section of Universal’s Islands of Adventure, offers a unique overhead perspective of Camp Jurassic. Riders board suspended “birds” that gently glide and swing above the prehistoric playground, creating a brief but memorable experience. While designed to delight young guests, the ride has gained notoriety for its strict height requirements, which often leave adults unable to experience it.
The rules for Pteranodon Flyers are clear: riders must be between 36 and 56 inches tall to board alone or with a taller companion. Adults taller than 56 inches can only ride if they’re accompanying a qualifying child.
For solo adult visitors or those without younger children, the attraction remains off-limits. This policy has puzzled guests for years, fueling speculation about why Universal enforces such restrictions.
Why Can’t Adults Ride Pteranodon Flyers at Universal Orlando Resort?
Contrary to popular belief, the restrictions are not due to weight concerns. A former Universal attractions operator, who worked on Pteranodon Flyers during a 13-year career, explained on Reddit that the limitations stem from the ride’s operational constraints. The attraction can only accommodate six riders at a time, as just three “birds” are allowed on the track simultaneously.
“It isn’t a weight issue, it’s a load issue,” the operator shared. “You can’t put more than three birds on the track without causing delays, ride stops, or other technical issues.”
This low capacity means even a handful of extra riders can significantly increase wait times. The operator recalled that allowing too many guests into the queue would quickly cause the line to snake through the Camp Jurassic area, creating congestion in pathways and exits. Universal briefly experimented with relaxing the height restriction, allowing adults to ride during limited hours. However, the trial resulted in chaos.
“The line would get backed up and end up winding all around the Camp Jurassic area,” the operator noted, adding that wait times sometimes exceeded four hours. With the ride lasting just 80 seconds, the demand far outpaced what the attraction could handle.
The Cold, Hard Truth of Pteranodon Flyers
While Pteranodon Flyers may seem like an exclusive experience, it may actually be a case of “the grass is always greener.” As per the same former ride operator, many adults who accompany children are left disappointed once they manage to ride the attraction.
“More often than not when adults do get off the ride, they express that they either found it terrifying or really, really stupid,” the operator shared.
For children unable to ride Universal’s larger attractions like VelociCoaster and Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure, Pteranodon Flyers offers a sense of adventure perfectly tailored to them. Although adults may feel left out, the ride remains a treasured highlight for its intended audience—young parkgoers seeking a sky-high thrill.
