Change is a huge part of the Disney theme parks, and Magic Kingdom is no exception. Over the years, visitors have seen Disneys original Florida park evolve and adapt, with new rides and attractions seemingly always around the corner. The park’s most recent additions are Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, a log flume ride, and TRON Lightcycle / Run, a futuristic roller coaster.
Both have been met with praise and popularity, but this is hardly where the upgrades stop. Work has officially begun in Piston Peak, Magic Kingdom’s newest area, with guests now blocked from the park’s central area in Frontierland.
A door now blocks the ramp to the Liberty Square Riverboat, and walls block access to the various entry and exit points for Tom Sawyer Island, as shown by Reddit user alexdionisos.

Tom Sawyer Island, along with the Rivers of America and Liberty Square Riverboat, all closed permanently on July 7, 2025. This trio had been a part of the Magic Kingdom for decades, offering guests the chance to explore the park’s more rustic side. These closures were quick, with Disney also quickly removing them from the official My Disney Experience app.
While certainly not the most popular attractions at Magic Kingdom, Tom Sawyer Island and the Liberty Square Riverboat were crucial parts of the park, adding to its selection of experiences while also shaping the way it looked and felt. To say Magic Kingdom and Disney World in general are now in uncharted waters is an understatement.
Not only does Disney have plans to overhaul Magic Kingdom, but Animal Kingdom and Hollywood Studios will also undergo significant changes in the coming years. Like Magic Kingdom’s new Piston Peak, Hollywood Studios will also be getting a new land inspired by a classic Pixar franchise. Called Monstropolis, the park’s new land will be based on the fictional city seen in Monsters Inc.
Animal Kingdom will receive a new land inspired by South America. Once complete, guests will find new attractions and experiences here, some based on popular Disney IPs like Indiana Jones and Encanto.
Timelines for these projects, including Magic Kingdom’s new Piston Peak are still unknown, so guests will have to keep their eyes and ears peeled as future updates are released by Disney.
