While visiting Magic Kingdom recently, we took a spin on the turnstile-less Tomorrowland PeopleMover, which afforded us a great look at the ongoing work taking place in the former Cool Ship location. When we last checked in on the project, the entire kiosk had been removed and the concrete had been demolished. What was once the coolest place to grab a snack in Tomorrowland was simply a pile of dirt. Now, new construction is underway.
New Foundation for Cool Ship Replacement in Tomorrowland
In theory, Disney somehow hauled away the old Cool Ship kiosk in one piece and is refreshing it as work on the foundation slab is completed. In practice, it seems like the Cool Ship structures were a bit more complex than an EPCOT festival kiosk.
Officially, Walt Disney World says that Cool Ship is under refurbishment and that it’ll return later this year. That said, it is possible that Cool Ship returns in name only, and that the structure is different than what has been in Tomorrowland for years and years. Here’s a look back at the kiosk from before it was ripped out of Tomorrowland.
In the past, when Cool Ship was under refurbishment, it would be common to see a low wall surrounding the kiosk. Needless to say, this “refurbishment” is far more invasive.
While it’s possible, and perhaps even likely, that Cool Ship ends up being replaced by Cool Ship, it is even more interesting to think about what Walt Disney World could be doing in this space. At the very least, I would expect Cool Ship to look similar, but different – updated to match the current visual style of the sort-of-refreshed Tomorrowland.
Ok, time to take a look at the latest work from our recent visit to Magic Kingdom. As you can see in our photos below, crews have started to frame out the foundation for the kiosk. Not knowing what the previous foundation looked like, it is probably too early to say if the kiosk will retain the same look. That said, it does appear to be roughly in the same position and even orientation as the previous iteration of Cool Ship.
