Walt Disney Imagineering has released a new episode of We Call It Imagineering where they dive into some of the upcoming projects coming to Disney theme parks around the world. One of the projects that was highlighted in the most recent episode was the upcoming Cars-themed attraction that will take guests into an off-road setting as we race through the wilderness. In one section of the video, it looks like Imagineers were working through some early mockups of the ride, giving us an early glimpse of what to expect from the attraction layout. Here’s a closer look!

Imagineering Reveals Cars-themed Attraction Layout

There are two screenshots below from the video, one showing a computer-based mockup of the Radiator Springs Racers attraction from Disney California Adventure, and a paper mockup that appears to the attraction coming to Magic Kingdom in the future.

First, here’s the only piece of concept art to be released with an overview of the attraction and Cars-themed expansion area in Frontierland. The attraction will be outdoors, and Imagineering just confirmed that it will be a track-based ride, likely similar to Test Track in operation, but substantially different in ride experience thanks to the bumpy nature of off-road rally races.

In the first screenshot below, we can see the layout of Radiator Springs Racers attraction in California. The computer simulation shows the timing of vehicles as they move through the space. An earlier version of this article incorrectly identified the computer visualization as that of the new Magic Kingdom attraction. What makes its inclusion in the Walt Disney Imagineering video interesting is that it appears to show some overlap between the new Cars-themed attraction coming to Magic Kingdom and the existing one in Disney California Adventure.

With the recent confirmation that the Magic Kingdom attraction would use a track-based ride system, our best guess is that there will be a ton of overlap between the Magic Kingdom attraction ride system and the Radiator Springs Racers ride system.

In another portion of the video, a small paper model appears to show the change in elevation that guests will experience in the new Magic Kingdom attraction. Early concept art showed that there would be significant changes in elevation throughout the ride, and that appears to be what Imagineering is aiming for. Here’s a look!
