Walt Disney Imagineering has filed a new Notice of Commencement permit for the Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin attraction at Magic Kingdom. The new permit taps Maddox Electric Company as the contractor and the scope of work is listed as “install projectors”. Like most permits, there isn’t a lot of details to go off of, and Walt Disney World rarely comments on updates made to an attraction. Therefore, it’s unclear if there the projectors are for a new effect, or if they’re updating an existing effect on the ride or in the queue.

If I had to guess, I would say that the Zurg tunnel before the finale scene could use some help, and new projectors in that room would make a lot of sense, but that’s just speculation. It’s also possible, but less likely, that Walt Disney World could be introducing a new effect on the 26-year-old attraction.

Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin Updates

Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin is a shooting gallery-style attraction with a dark-ride component. Guests board an Omnimover vehicle and use blasters to shoot digital lasers at various targets. There is an on-board scoreboard to show you what your score is throughout the attraction, and lighting and sound effects play when you hit a target. Guests can also control the direction that the ride vehicle is pointed by moving a joystick.

Guests are sent on a mission by Star Command to defeat the Evil Emperor Zurg, who is trying to steal batteries. At one point later in the ride, guests travel through a dark, cavernous room where a projection of Zurg’s ship zips throughout the space. Guests try to shoot at Zurg’s ship before entering the final room for a face-off with Zurg himself. The scene is pictured below, and it would be my top guess for where the work will take place.

It’s unclear if the ride will need to close to accommodate the work, but it has not been added to the Walt Disney World refurbishment calendar at this time.
