Pixar’s latest animated feature, Elio, has broken a longstanding box office record: its opening weekend is projected to earn the lowest debut in the studio’s history. Directed by Domee Shi, Madeline Sharafian, and Adrian Molina, the film tells the story of Elio (Yonas Kibreab), a kid obsessed with aliens who finds himself unexpectedly abducted by extraterrestrials. Amid this adventure, Elio befriends Glordon (Remy Edgerly), a worm-like alien who helps him defend the intergalactic collective known as the Communiverse from Elio’s father, Lord Grigon (Brad Garrett), who plans to take over.

The Cast and Storyline
Along with Kibreab’s lead performance, Elio features a star-studded voice cast, including Zoe Saldaña as Elio’s aunt Olga, Shirley Henderson as the liquid supercomputer OOOOO, and Jameela Jamil as Communiverse ambassador Questa. The film is set against a backdrop of cosmic adventures, where Elio must navigate his newfound responsibility in protecting the Communiverse.
While Elio has captured the imagination of many Pixar fans, its box office performance is generating headlines for the wrong reasons. According to Deadline, the movie is projected to close out its opening weekend with a 3-day domestic total of just over $22 million, securing the No. 3 spot at the box office for the weekend. It trails behind 28 Years Later, a new release horror film, which sits at No. 2, and the second weekend of the live-action How to Train Your Dragon remake, holding onto the top spot.
A Mixed Reception at the Box Office
Despite Pixar’s strong track record and the film’s vibrant storyline, Elio is poised to have the worst opening weekend for the studio in its history. While projections could shift slightly by Sunday’s close, the debut figures highlight an unexpected challenge for Pixar. The movie’s debut could fall short of its projected expectations, as many anticipated it to perform better given the studio’s consistent box office dominance in previous years.
While some believe that Elio’s niche sci-fi theme might not appeal to all families, others point to the unique premise and the diversity of the film’s lead character as positive aspects that set it apart from other animated features. However, it’s clear that the film has struggled to gain the same widespread momentum as previous Pixar releases, which often see their opening weekends driven by strong family-friendly appeal.

A Shift in Pixar’s Legacy?
As Elio attempts to carve out its place in the Pixar legacy, the mixed box office results may prompt a reevaluation of Pixar’s recent approach. While the studio has always been lauded for pushing boundaries and experimenting with new genres, Elio’s performance might suggest that even established studios are not immune to changing audience preferences.
While Pixar continues to innovate in animation, the studio now faces the challenge of reconnecting with the audience in a rapidly evolving entertainment landscape. With Elio breaking a historic record for Pixar, the question remains whether the film’s long-term reception will be influenced more by its unique narrative and character-driven storytelling or whether its underwhelming box office results will overshadow its creative achievements.

As Pixar moves forward, it remains to be seen how Elio will impact the studio’s future releases and whether it will ultimately find its place as a cult classic in the Pixar canon.
