The monsters are out and flying dragons are in! This evening, Disneyland announced a number of new details about its plans for new rides at Disney California Adventure and beyond. In this update, we’ll take a look at what was announced for a new Avatar-themed area.
Avatar-themed Area to Replace Hollywood Backlot at Disney California Adventure
Disneyland is still a bit shy, not quite calling this an Avatar Land, but rather a “destination”. Regardless, it will replace a portion of the Hollywood Backlot area in Disney California Adventure. As a result of the work, the Monsters Inc. ride will close permanently in early 2026. Here’s the announcement from Disneyland:
…we’re looking forward to transforming a portion of the current Hollywood Backlot area into our Avatar destination in Disney California Adventure. This project is still in the early stages of development, and additional details will be shared later, including construction timeframes.To make way for this new experience, Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! will close in early 2026.
The all-new destination is inspired by the Way of Water, Fire and Ash, and future movies.
The land will feature an all-new attraction that will take place on a “grand scale”. Guests will go on the adventure of a lifetime in search of majestic natural wonders that can only be found on Pandora and the beauty – and danger – that come along with the journey. This new and thrilling excursion will bring all the action, excitement, and wonder of Avatar, taking guests all the way to the wide-open seas of Pandora.
