In 2005, author Rick Riordan released what would be the first in an incredibly popular series about a young demigod named Percy Jackson. The Percy Jackson series takes place in the modern world, where the Greek gods still exist. Percy, who is just learning how to use and harness his powers, must prevent Kronos and his band of Titans from destroying the world. After publishing Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief, Riordan would go on to publish four more books in the series — The Sea of Monsters, The Titan’s Curse, The Battle of the Labyrinth, and The Last Olympian.

Mr. Riordan’s book series was so popular that, in 2020, he actually pitched turning the books into a television show to Disney. And they absolutely loved his idea.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians premiered on Disney+ on December 19, 2023, and the new show was just as popular as the books it was based on.

The first season focused on the events in The Lightning Thief. Percy is attending Camp Half-Blood, where he is learning to hone his demigod powers. Zeus then accuses him of stealing his lightning bolt. Percy must find the lightning bolt and return it to Olympus if he wants to prove his innocence and restore order on Mount Olympus.

When it was released, Percy Jackson and the Olympians did not just break records on Disney+ but also on Hulu and even TikTok. Then, during an earnings call in February 2024, Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed that the show had been renewed for a second season.

The final episode of the first season aired on January 30, 2024, and fans have been eagerly awaiting season two ever since.

Although Disney confirmed that season two was happening more than one year ago, there is no season two premiere anytime soon. At Disney’s D23 fan event, which was held back in August, it was confirmed that the show had begun filming, but season two would not air until sometime in 2025.

However, the length of time between seasons does not mean that Disney is doubting its decision to renew the show. In fact, Disney is doubling down on its belief in Percy Jackson and his fellow demigods.

While it was impressive that Percy Jackson received a season two renewal just days after the season one finale aired, what just happened for the hit show is even more mind-blowing.

According to multiple reports, Disney has already renewed the show for a third season! That’s right — Percy Jackson and the Olympians has been confirmed for a third season before an episode of season two even aired!

Per a report from Variety, season two will premiere this December, and season three is already in the works. The second season will be based on the second book in the series — Sea of Monsters — and the third season will be based on Titan’s Curse.

“From the moment ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ debuted, it was clear this series had struck a chord with fans of all ages,” said Ayo Davis, president of Disney Branded Television. “With season two set to premiere this December, we’re thrilled to announce that Percy’s journey will continue with a third season. Huge thanks to our incredible cast and creative team, our partners at 20th Television, and our visionary and talented producers who continue to bring Rick Riordan’s world to life with such depth and imagination.”

Rick Riordan also confirmed the third season and voiced his excitement for furthering Percy’s story.

“We’re so grateful to be continuing the story of Percy Jackson on Disney+,” Riordan said. “This third season will be new territory for the screen, bringing fan favorites like the Hunters of Artemis and Nico di Angelo to life for the first time. It’s a huge sign of commitment from Disney, and speaks volumes about the enthusiasm with which the fandom has embraced the TV show. Thank you, demigods worldwide!”

Season two of Percy Jackson and the Olympians will see the return of Walker Scobell as Percy Jackson and Leah Sava Jeffries and Aryan Simhadri, who play Percy’s best friends Annabeth Chase and Grover Underwood. Charlie Bushnell will play Luke Castellan, Dior Goodjohn portrays Clarisse La Rue, and Daniel Diemer will play Tyson.
