It’s a bird. It’s a plane. It’s a dragon drone from Universal’s How to Train Your Dragon. As previously confirmed by Universal Orlando Resort, flying dragons will be seen in the skies above Epic Universe once it opens to the public on May 22nd. The dragons will actually be drones, and local TV station WESH was able to spot one of the dragons staged for takeoff near the Epic Universe theme park.
Hookfang Drone Flying Dragon for Epic Universe

The dragon in question is Hookfang, a Monstrous Nightmare style dragon. As you can see in the photos above, and the video below, the dragon is fixed to a large drone that will carry it over the Isle of Berk land in Universal Epic Universe.
As Disney fans will remember, Disney rolled out a flying dragon years and years ago during a media event for the opening of New Fantasyland at Magic Kingdom. That technology was not driven by drones, and the dragon didn’t make another public appearance.
Disney’s use of drone technology expanded when they rolled out X-Wing ships for the grand opening weekend of Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance. Unfortunately, Disney did not continue the use of the X-Wing drones beyond the initial few days.

Now, Universal has thrown the gauntlet with ambitious plans to have dragons flying over the Isle of Berk, and the mention of them in a blog post indicates that Universal’s plans are to keep the dragons around and not only debut them as a limited-time offering.
The technology doesn’t stop in the skies, though. Universal also has plans for a robotic walk-around dragon named Dart.
