For nearly 70 years, Disney has shaped the theme park industry, expanding its footprint across the globe with six major resorts. Among them, Hong Kong Disneyland stands out—not just for its location and stellar castle but for its tumultuous journey since opening in 2005. Now, as it marks its 20th anniversary, the park is preparing for a major transformation to solidify its place as a must-visit destination in Asia.
A Challenging Two Decades
When Hong Kong Disneyland first opened, expectations were high. Designed to expand Disney’s reach in Asia, the park was meant to be a gateway for international visitors and a direct competitor to other regional attractions. However, its small footprint and a lack of exclusive rides led to early criticism, with many guests comparing it unfavorably to other Disney parks.

Economic challenges soon followed. The 2008 financial crisis impacted global tourism, and local unrest in Hong Kong further complicated visitor numbers. Even as expansions like Mystic Point and Grizzly Gulch introduced original attractions, it took time for the park to gain momentum.
The COVID-19 pandemic was another significant setback, leading to prolonged closures and strict travel restrictions that severely impacted attendance. Yet, despite these struggles, Hong Kong Disneyland has shown resilience, adapting and evolving to remain relevant. The launch of the Castle of Magical Dreams and the highly anticipated World of Frozen have helped revitalize interest, with recent financial reports confirming that the park has repaid its Disney-funded credit facility—an important milestone in its recovery.

A Grand Celebration and New Experiences
Now, Disney is making sure the park’s 20th anniversary is celebrated in style. The resort has announced an ambitious entertainment overhaul, set to debut in the summer of 2025 as part of “The Most Magical Party of All.”
A highlight of the festivities will be the brand-new “Friendtastic!” Parade, the largest daytime parade in Hong Kong Disneyland’s history. Featuring 11 floats and a diverse lineup of characters, it marks the first daytime parade since Flights of Fantasy ended in 2020.
Additionally, “Momentous” Nighttime Spectacular—considered by some (“some” meaning this writer) as one of Disney’s most impressive fireworks shows—will be enhanced with new scenes, drone effects, and Main Street, U.S.A. projections, drawing comparisons to Magic Kingdom’s Happily Ever After and Disneyland Paris’ new addition, Disney Tales of Magic.

A new limited-time stage show will also debut in front of the Castle of Magical Dreams, starring Mickey and friends alongside Hong Kong Disneyland-exclusive characters Duffy, LinaBell, CookieAnn, and StellaLou.
What Else (And What’s Missing?)
Disney fans can expect a full-park transformation, including 20th anniversary-themed merchandise, special food and beverage offerings, and unique decorations across Hong Kong Disneyland’s three hotels: Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel, Disney’s Explorers Lodge, and Disney’s Hollywood Hotel.
However, one notable absence from the lineup is Paint the Night. Hong Kong Disneyland previously hosted the beloved nighttime parade, and while it’s set to return to Disneyland Resort in California for the park’s 70th anniversary, it seems like the parade is dead in Hong Kong – for now, at least.

With these updates, Disney is reaffirming its commitment to Hong Kong Disneyland’s future. After two decades of ups and downs, the park is gearing up for a new era—one that promises to capture the magic of Disney while catering to its growing audience in Asia.
