While visiting Disney’s Animal Kingdom recently, we noticed that there has been some work in the water at the former Rivers of Light amphitheater. With the conclusion of the Rivers of Light show back in 2020 and with the end of the KiteTails show in September 2022, Disney fans have been wondering what’s next for the water amphitheater.
Changes at Rivers of Light Amphitheater
We first noticed some changes when new theming was added to the Asia side of the venue in March 2023. The change was interesting, especially for a venue where Disney had no announced plans for a new show anytime soon. We were hoping it was an indication that there were plans to use the venue once again. Now, nearly two years later, that clearly wasn’t the case.
That said, there have been some more recent changes, this time in the water, that have us wondering if Disney is doing some preparation for a new show or activation.
What gives me pause that this is for something new is the fact that we aren’t seeing the addition of something, but rather the removal of something. Either way, it’s notable that money is being spent and changes are occurring. As you can see in this archive photo, this is a look back at the former KiteTails dock/launch area that was themed to water-based businesses such as a fishing trek and rafting expeditions.
While visiting Disney’s Animal Kingdom recently, we noticed that about half of the dock had been removed. All that remains where the dock used to sit are the pylons that were driven into the lake bed. Here’s a look at the existing theming, and a look at where the dock was removed.
It’s probably too early to say if something new is on the way, but unless the dock was sinking or otherwise required capital in the form of maintenance, I can’t imagine that removing it was necessary…unless something new is in the works.
At the very least, we can say that the removal of this purpose-built dock for KiteTails means that the show isn’t going to make an unexpected comeback anytime soon.
