While visiting Magic Kingdom today, we noticed that a large crane had arrived in a backstage area next to Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. The crane is sitting in a backstage area that we previously noted was in the process of land clearing not too long ago. Here’s a look!
Crane Arrives at Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
The crane is likely in place to support a rumored full re-track of the attraction. As you may know, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is closing in January 2025 for a lengthy refurbishment. According to Walt Disney World, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will not reopen until sometime in 2026.
Another big project set to begin next year is land clearing to support the demolition of the Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island. Disney is currently (very slowly) jumping through hoops to get that permit approved. Without the permit approval, work cannot begin for the Rivers of America demolition, but the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad project is not waiting on a permit and is not directly associated with that project.
First, here’s a look at the land clearing near Big Thunder Mountain Railroad before the crane arrived.
We’ll start our on-the-ground reporting from the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad queue and ride for the best view of the crane, followed by a view from the Liberty Square Riverboat, which should provide some good views of the construction as long as it’s open.
