Even though many of us thought that Iron Man’s reign in the Marvel Cinematic Universe ended when Tony Stark/Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) died in Avengers: Endgame, Disney continues to find ways to bring the legacy back.

Disney Jr. has officially greenlit “Marvel’s Iron Man and His Awesome Friends,” marking the first-ever Iron Man series aimed at preschool audiences. The show is set to premiere in summer 2025 on both Disney Jr. and Disney+, per Variety.

Currently in production, the series will follow a young Tony Stark alongside his “world-saving besties”: Riri Williams (Ironheart) and Amadeus Cho (Iron Hulk). Together, the trio of animated heroes will team up to protect their city and support one another.

The logline of the show is as follows:

“To help them in their Super Hero endeavors, they each have their own Iron Suits that allow them to fly and give them each enhanced super-strength. In addition, Iron Man has a Nano-Shield; Ironheart has a Heartbeat Bubble forcefield to protect people, and Iron Hulk has his strong Iron Boom clap and Iron Hulk Stomp.”

The animated series Marvel’s Iron Man and His Awesome Friends introduces a new team of young superheroes. The trio, consisting of Tony Stark, Riri Williams, and Amadeus Cho, will operate from their beachfront base, Iron Quarters (IQ), under the supervision of their superpowered android, Vision, and their furry companion, Gamma.

The series features the voices of Mason Blomberg, Kapri Ladd, and Aidyn Ahn as Tony Stark (Iron Man), Riri Williams (Ironheart), and Amadeus Cho (Iron Hulk), respectively. David Kaye voices Vision, and Fred Tatasciore portrays Gamma.

It’s important to note that the Tony Stark in this series is not the same as the young Tony Stark featured in Marvel’s Spidey and His Amazing Friends, voiced by John Stamos.

Will Robert Downey Jr. Revive the Role in Any Way?

While Tony Stark will return to Disney, it will not be at the hand of Robert Downey Jr. in this animated series. 

Robert Downey Jr.’s partnership with Disney is best known for his iconic portrayal of Tony Stark/Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). His debut as the genius billionaire in 2008’s Iron Man not only revitalized his career but also launched one of the most successful film franchises of all time.

Downey Jr.’s portrayal of Stark became legendary, blending wit, vulnerability, and action, making him one of Hollywood’s top stars. Under Disney’s ownership of Marvel, he reprised the role in numerous MCU films, including The Avengers (2012), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), and Avengers: Infinity War (2018). His performance in Avengers: Endgame (2019) was especially notable, delivering a powerful conclusion to his character’s story and the Infinity Saga, earning him widespread critical acclaim and cementing his place as a fan favorite.

In addition to the MCU, Downey Jr. also collaborated with Disney on other projects. He voiced the titular character in Dolittle (2020), a film produced by Universal Pictures but distributed internationally by Disney. Although not as successful as his Marvel roles, it showcased his continued work with Disney’s broader entertainment network.

Recently, Downey Jr. made waves at San Diego Comic-Con, where he announced his new role as Doctor Doom in the upcoming film Avengers: Doomsday. The announcement was a spectacle, with fans donning Doctor Doom masks in anticipation. “I love playing complex characters,” Downey told the excited audience. This new chapter in his career will be directed by the Russo brothers, known for their work on previous Avengers films, including Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.

Downey’s involvement in this new Marvel era was the result of discussions with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige. After some consideration, Downey embraced the role of Victor Von Doom, with enthusiastic support from Disney CEO Bob Iger. His portrayal of Doctor Doom is expected to bring new depth to the MCU, as Secret Wars will adapt one of Marvel’s most epic storylines, where parallel universes collide and Doctor Doom plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of the MCU.
